Gold’s Gym is an international chain of fitness centers. The well-known gym licenses its name to ICON Health and Fitness. ICON markets a line of treadmills, cross trainers, bikes, and strength training equipment under the Gold’s Gym name.

Gold’s Gym treadmills and elliptical trainers often look similar to those made by ProForm and NordicTrack, which are two of ICON’s other famous brands – and those brands may offer better warranty packages. Gold’s Gym fitness machines cost less but aren’t as durable.

Gold’s Gym strength training equipment gets good ratings. The Power Tower stands out for its sturdiness and good value.

Special Features of Gold’s Gym Fitness Equipment

» Low cost is a main appeal. Many major items such as Gold’s Gym home gyms and treadmills cost just a few hundred dollars.

» Variety – Many products are included in the Gold’s Gym catalog, so customers can set up a full home gym through one vendor.

Gold’s Gym Fitness Equipment Lines

Treadmills – The brand’s current listings include seven treadmill models ranging from the very low-budget Gold’s Gym Trainer 480 to the Trainer 1190. These are generally sold with long motor warranties but short warranties for parts and labor, and reviews aren’t outstanding. Here are some highlights in order of MSRP:

The entry-level 480 gets poor customer reviews. Complaints cover a number of issues: a hard-to-read display, an inaccurate heart rate monitor, broken parts, and more. The 550 model has also been criticized for a burnt-out display.

The CrossWalk 570 gets better reviews than the 480 and 550. It has movable upper-body bars, a built-in sound system, 16 personal trainer workouts, and a heart rate monitor. However, the CrossWalk 650 is an even better buy. It includes motivational audio coaching, interactive workouts, and a power incline. The 2.8 HP motor is sold with a long warranty. Both the CrossWalk 570 and 650 have 55” tracks.

The well-received Interactive 890 treadmill is named for its built-in interactive personal training workouts and iFit options. It has a well-cushioned 55” track that reduces impact up to 33% compared with road training. However, unlike the CrossWalk treadmill models, it doesn’t have movable handlebars for an upper-body workout.

The 1190 is Gold’s Gym’s top trainer, but it rates below the 890 in customer reviews.

Elliptical Machines/Striders – Gold’s Gym currently features three elliptical trainers or striders for home use. All are priced under $500 for budget-minded consumers, but they get generally positive reviews. They have 7-year frame warranties but just 90-day warranties for parts and labor.

The StrideTrainer 380 gets many good reviews and some complaints. Customers complain that it’s difficult to assemble and is somewhat squeaky. However, they also say that it provides effective workouts. Some people might feel limited by its 14” stride and the low number of programs (6).

The CrossTrainer 480 has 12 workouts, including four personal trainer workouts, and 10 resistance levels. Some other features include a workout fan, an iPod-compatible speaker system, a water bottle holder, and a heart rate monitor.

The StrideTrainer 595 has an 18” stride, 14 built-in workouts, and 12 levels of resistance. It also has an intensity ramp, a fan, a water bottle holder, and a sound system with an MP3 port.

Stationary bikes – Gold’s Gym sells two exercise bikes in its PowerSpin series: the recumbent 230 R and the upright 210 U.

PowerSpin 230 R – This recumbent exercise bike has an iPod-compatible sound system and 8 personal trainer workouts. The Target Pacer helps people stay on track, indicating when to speed up and when to slow down. This bike has a workout fan and a heart rate monitor.

PowerSpin 210 U – This upright exercise bike is similar to the recumbent model. It has an iPod-compatible sound system, 8 personal trainer workouts, and Target Pacer technology. Customers have minor complaints (flimsy pedal straps, difficult battery compartment) but give this product high ratings overall.

Strength Training – The Gold’s Gym brand currently features four strength training benches, an inversion system, a Power Tower, 25-pound single dumbbells, and a barbell holder.

Benches — Each of the four bench models is sold with a poster depicting bench exercises. Gold’s Gym bench options include two slant benches, the basic but adjustable XR 5.9 and the highly versatile Gold’s Gym XRS Slant Bench. The XRS has adjustable workout arms that can be used in dozens of exercises. Also offered are the XR 7.9 and 18.9 workout benches. The XR 7.9 includes weight crutches and a 4-roll leg developer. The 18.9 Olympic Bench has adjustable spotters, a 6-roll leg developer, and a rolled preacher pad.

The Gold’s Gym Inversion System has an adjustable safety strap to fit users from 5’0” – 6’6”. It has a 250-pound weight capacity.

The Power Tower has stations for dips, knee raises, push-ups, and pull-ups. Customers consistently describe it as easy to assemble, sturdy, and worth buying.

The brand also features an inexpensive 5-in-1 Ultimate Home Training Kit. It includes a multi-training door attachment, rotating push-up stands with adjustable resistance, and ab & core straps.

Drawbacks of Gold’s Gym Fitness Equipment

Delivery options – Gold’s Gym generally doesn’t offer residential delivery for its fitness machines. This means that customers must drive to another location to pick up heavy items.

Shorter warranties – Gold’s Gym treadmills typically include just 1-year parts warranties, and the elliptical warranties are even shorter.

Low quality – As noted some product names above, some Gold’s Gym products are made from substandard parts.

FreeMotion Fitness was initially a commercial-only division of ICON Health & Fitness, a US-based global leader in the fitness equipment industry. Since 1999, FreeMotion machines have been purchased by thousands of hotels and fitness clubs worldwide – and now the products have been adapted for home use.

The brand’s high-quality offerings include numerous commercial, light commercial, and residential products: ellipticals, exercise bikes, incline trainers, striders, treadmills, strength-building products, and vibrating platforms.

Special Features of FreeMotion Fitness Equipment

» Premium quality is a hallmark of FreeMotion Fitness. While ICON owns a number of fitness equipment brands, it devotes special attention to this luxury line. Customers benefit from the blending of premium parts and ICON’s team of 200 engineers.

» Excellent warranties also help customers keep peace of mind. For example, the relatively basic FreeMotion Treadmill t5.2 is sold with a lifetime warranty on the frame, 15 years on the motor, five years on parts, and two years of labor. Some FreeMotion home fitness products have even longer warranties.

Another FreeMotion Brand Advantage: Customer Service

While some ICON brands rank poorly for customer service, the FreeMotion line is distinguished by its great consumer relations. Managers’ names and toll-free numbers are readily available, agents are US-based, and a number of helpful troubleshooting videos are posted to YouTube.

FreeMotion Fitness Equipment Lines

Home Treadmills & Incline Trainers – FreeMotion’s home treadmill line has 7 models. This includes: two incline trainers; the FreeMotion 750; the XTr; and treadmill models t5.2, t5.6, and t5.8. Here are some highlights:

Incline trainers – The Incline Trainer and Incline Trainer Pro are designed to help maximize workout time; incline training isolates a variety of muscle groups and promotes more energy expenditure per minute than flat training does. Both machines have heart rate monitors, iFit Live, Intermix Acoustics, and other special features. The Pro model has additional programs, a larger workout fan, and a 7” full-color touch-screen display.

FreeMotion 750 – This treadmill has a powerful 3.5 HP motor, a roomy track, and iFit workout card technology.

FreeMotion XTr – This luxury treadmill features adjustable cushioning, 34 built-in workouts, and iFit Live personal training. The deck folds vertically for storage.

The T series – The T5.2, 5.6, and 5.8 treadmills get mixed reviews. For its relatively high price, the T5.2 disappoints because users can’t enter their personal data for accurate calorie counting. The T5.8 gets better ratings. It has a 15-degree adjustable incline, integrated speakers, and excellent shock absorption.

Commercial Treadmills & Incline Trainers - FreeMotion sells two commercial treadmills, two light commercial treadmills, and one light commercial treadmill/incline trainer. All have long two-ply belts, superior cushioning, and powerful 5.0 motors. Their decks are coated with extra-thick resin and are reversible to last twice as long as non-reversible decks.

The top-of-the-line light commercial FreeMotion trainer is named the i7.7. It has a 30% incline for intense workouts, wireless and grip heart rate monitors, and a multi-speed fan to keep exercisers cool. Generous warranties are included for home and commercial settings.

The brand’s commercial treadmill is available with and without a TV. While it’s an excellent machine, it seems overpriced when compared with the significantly more affordable light commercial options.

Striders – Sometimes referred to as stairclimbers, striders are hybrids of elliptical machines and incline trainers. They’re designed to let people simulate walking or running without putting undue pressure on their joints. In addition to providing great arm and leg workouts, these machines target core muscles with every push-and-pull motion, effectively having users do crunches while standing.

FreeMotion features two striders for home use, the F 5.6 and the F 5.8. Both have extra-long strides – they’re adjustable up to 35” — but they take up minimal floor space.

Both include entertainment, excellent cushioning, and a workout fan. They also have iFit card readers for targeted personal training. The more advanced version, the F 5.8, has a small digital TV on the console.

There’s also a commercial strider, the FreeMotion. It lets users take up to 44” strides. This 385-pound luxury exercise machine features iFit technology, an iPod dock, and a TV console. The brand’s light commercial strider, the s7.8, also has a 44” variable stride and can be used with iFit cards.

Strength Training – Strength training equipment can be used to strengthen the core body (abs, shoulders, etc.) while also sculpting the arms and legs. FreeMotion highlights two of its light commercial products for home use: the EXT Adjustable Bench and the EXT Dual Cable Cross. Both products take up relatively little space. They can be used together or separately.

The EXT Adjustable Bench is ideal for working out with dumbbells or the EXT Dual Cable Cross. The bench has multiple positions: the seat tilts up to 25 degrees, and the back has a 77-degree range of motion. It also has integrated wheels for convenience.

The EXT Dual Cable Cross lends heavy powder-coated steel an ultra-modern look. Two arms extend from a sturdy white core. Each arm can support 210 pounds of moving weights – and since the arms are independent, two people can use the machine at once. The arms rotate in 12 vertical patterns and 9 horizontal patterns to support just about any exercise with the arms or legs. Attached pulleys provide a full range of motion, and Velcro ankle straps assist with leg training. This machine can train users weighing up to 350 pounds.

FreeMotion manufactures three products for the light commercial market: two multi-use gyms and an adjustable bench. Their commercial strength training line includes a whopping 58 products. Its fitness machines are more targeted than the light commercial group’s multi-purpose gyms. Some product examples include FreeMotion Chest, FreeMotion Bicep, and FreeMotion Squat. The even higher-end products are named FM Epic (e.g., FM Epic Chest and FM Epic Bicep).

The commercial line also features military presses, Olympic weight and bar sets, Beauty Bells, and other strength training equipment.

Vibrating Gym Equipment

Vibrating gym equipment is one of the hottest trends in fitness. Vibration training capitalizes on instability: a machine’s vibration causes the user’s muscles to automatically contract as they seek equilibrium. This enhances workout efficiency. Whole-body vibration training can easily be integrated into any exercise regimen.

FreeMotion’s commercial Vertex machine has handles for stability. Users can stand, sit, or lay down as the machine moves through vibration exercises. The Vertex accommodates users weighing up to 400 pounds.

Drawbacks of FreeMotion Fitness Equipment

iFit requirements – To enjoy many of iFit’s special features, the user needs to have wireless internet technology in the workout area. Also, the cost of an iFit Live membership and/or iFit cards should be figured into the purchase price if applicable.

Price – These high-quality products usually aren’t sold for a bargain. However, with the exception of a few models, FreeMotions are worth the extra investment. They have excellent warranties and will remain useful for many years.

Reebok, the brand name known for athletic apparel and sports accessories, is licensed to ICON Health and Fitness for use with home fitness equipment. ICON’s newer Reebok treadmills and elliptical cross trainers are regarded as relatively durable equipment for the budget and middle markets.

A Reebok Brand Advantage: iFit Live

iFit Live is included on many ICON Fitness products, including the newer Reebok treadmills and cross trainers. iFit Live’s main feature is virtual personal training, which is provided by the celebrity personal trainer Jillian Michaels and other experts. Workouts are designed in accordance with each user’s weight and goals, and the user hears encouraging messages during exercise.

iFit Live also lets users virtually experience trails from all over the globe. By interfacing with Google Maps, the technology makes treadmills and ellipticals automatically adjust to mimic real terrain. People can virtually run through their favorite local neighborhoods or visit famous destinations like the Grand Canyon.

With iFit.com, members can automatically upload their workout data, get personalized advice about exercise and diet, and compete in virtual races with friends who use Facebook.

Special Features of Reebok Fitness Equipment

» Good quality – These are good, middle-of-the-road machines with some nice extras. Reebok treadmills and ellipticals last longer than budget equipment, but not as long as expensive equipment. They don’t have “whisper-quiet” operation, but they aren’t terribly noisy either. Customers can expect to use these products for at least a few years before serious maintenance is needed.

» Wide distribution – Reebok cross trainers and treadmills are widely distributed, so it should be relatively easy to find a qualified technician if needed. Brand recognition also helps in the resale process.

» Extras include built-in personal trainer workouts, iFit Live, workout fans, heart rate monitors, and iPod docks with integrated speaker systems.

Note: This brand has improved its warranties. Reebok once had very short warranties, offering just 90 days on parts and labor. The newest Reebok treadmill includes a 25-year motor warranty and a year of parts and labor. The new Reebok elliptical trainer has a one-year warranty on parts and labor. For both machines, an extended $179 warranty package is available. This extends the parts and labor warranty to four years, and labor is in-home.

Reebok Equipment Lines

Treadmills – The brand’s treadmill offerings for 2010 include just one model, the V 8.90. It has a SpaceSaver design, which means that the deck can be folded up for storage. At the same time, the machine is sturdy and can support about 250 pounds (not necessarily 350 as advertised). It has a 2.25 HP motor.

Programs: This model features 14 built-in workout programs plus the option of using iFit workout cards. Each iFit workout card adds eight weeks of personal training for weight loss, endurance, or another fitness goal.

Features: Other attractive features on the V 8.90 include a 10% incline, a dual-grip heart rate monitor, and a sound system with Intermix Acoustics speakers and an iPod-compatible music port.

Track: The 55” track length is suitable for most people, but tall runners might find that it cuts their stride short.

Elliptical Machines – Elliptical machines are ideal for low-impact exercise that burns a lot of calories. They’re used to simulate walking or running without putting undue pressure on joints. Legs move in a smooth cyclical motion instead of repeatedly hitting the ground.

Reebok currently promotes just one of its elliptical trainers, the RL 1500. It’s a significant improvement over the 645 and 725 models, which are known for their noisiness. The RL 1500 has a 20” stride, letting most people use a full range of motion. Fifteen training programs are built into the console and resistance can easily be adjusted mid-workout with the touch of a button. Unfortunately, iFit is not included.

This machine gets great customer reviews for its quiet operation, comfortable ride, and efficient training programs. However, other brands offer better overall value.

Drawbacks of Reebok Fitness Equipment

Customer service – In this reviewer’s experience, Reebok customer service has been friendly enough but slow and disorganized. Many customers have also reported poor service; customers are put on hold for an extended period of time, calls are routed incorrectly, etc.

Epic Fitness is a division of ICON’s luxury brand, FreeMotion Fitness. It’s a step down from the premium FM Epic line, which features machines for commercial use; Epic Fitness products have lower price tags and are sold for residential use.

This is a relatively small line of fitness equipment; there are just three treadmills (all of which are incline trainers) and a few strength training products. For the extensive lineup of FM Epic equipment, see our FreeMotion Fitness review.

Special Features of Epic Fitness Equipment

ü Affordable – Epic treadmills and strength training machines aren’t quite budget models, but they’re relatively inexpensive and offer good value.

ü Good quality is a hallmark of Epic Fitness. For instance, their treadmills are made with durable motors and above-average rollers to help extend track life.

ü Great warranties also characterize this brand. The View 550 treadmill, for example, is sold with a lifetime frame warranty, a 12-year motor warranty, and a year of labor. Epic also offers a 30-day trial period and will refund the purchase price minus return shipping and a 10% restocking fee.

Another Epic Brand Advantage: Extras

Epic’s home treadmills include extras to make workouts more diverse and the whole experience of exercising more enjoyable. Special features include power inclines, flat screen TVs, iPod ports, high-end speakers, and iFit Live.

iFit Live, which is available with the XTr Treadmill, uses wireless internet technology to enhance workouts. Users can upload their data to iFit.com to get personal training, find nutrition advice, and virtually compete in 5K races with Facebook friends. Members can also download exercise videos from the site.

Epic Fitness Equipment Lines

Incline Trainers/Treadmills – Epic’s three treadmills can be used flat or inclined up to 12 degrees to increase calorie burning and specially target the glutes, quads, and calf muscles. Each model has a 55” or 60” long walking surface and can support speeds up to 12 mph.

The View 550 is often considered a best buy in the home treadmill market. Most notably, this durable machine mixes TV with exercise. It includes a 7” color TV, an integrated speaker system, and an MP3 port for music-powered exercise sessions. Combine those features with the 28 built-in programs, and this machine will keep most people motivated to work out!

The View 550 also has patented cushioning, a workout fan, and a quiet 3.0 HP motor.

The 600 MX Treadmill is simpler than the View 550, but it packs in some nice features. It has handlebar-based heart rate monitors, a workout fan, a 0 – 12% incline, and special cushioning. Compared with the View 550, it has a shorter track (55” instead of 60”) and half the workout programs. Its 2.5 HP motor is sold with a 12-year warranty.

This machine also has a SpaceSaver design, which means that the deck can be folded up for storage.

The Epic XTr is the lowest-priced treadmill in Epic’s current lineup, but it features 34 built-in workout programs, optional iFit Live, a powerful 3.0 HP motor, and a number of other attractive features.

This machine may be less durable that the View 550 and the 600 MX. It has a lifetime warranty on the frame and motor but just a one-year warranty on other parts. Still, compared to the other models, it costs less and is more enjoyable to use.

Strength Training – Strength training equipment can be used to strengthen and define arms, legs, and the core body (the abdomen, back, chest, and shoulders). Epic manufactures two strength training machines for home use: the S83 Power System and the S75 Strength Training Machine.

S83 Power System – This Epic product is advertised as a commercial-quality gym. It includes 400 pounds of resistance and has seven workout stations: Standing Squat; Calf Raise; Pivoting Pulleys; Free Motion Press; Leg Developer; Curl Bar; and Low Pulley for the arms. The unit is 73” long and 70” wide.

S75 Strength Training Machine – This machine’s special feature is its digital coach. This lets beginners and more advanced athletes benefit from being walked through their exercise routines, and it even counts reps! The S75 has 200 pounds of weights and nine workout stations including a military press, a rowing station, and a low pulley.

For the more extensive FM Epic equipment line, see our FreeMotion Fitness review. The commercial FM Epic line features highly specialized workout stations, military presses, Olympic weight and bar sets, Beauty Bells, and other strength training equipment.

Drawbacks of Epic’s Fitness Equipment

Customer service – While FreeMotion Fitness gets great reviews for customer service, the Epic division does not. Customers have complained that agents are not helpful and sometimes do not return calls.

Low-priced Weslo fitness equipment is designed for beginning athletes. In the words of parent company ICON, these products help people take their “first steps” toward a healthier life. Many people who start out with budget Weslo equipment upgrade to another brand within a year or two.

Weslo sells stationary bikes, elliptical trainers, and treadmills for residential use.

Special Features of Weslo Fitness Equipment

» Low cost is this brand’s main appeal. The bikes, ellipticals, and treadmills all have MSRPs under $500.

» Attractive design – These fitness machines look modern, streamlined, and attractive overall. Their frames are the color of brushed nickel, and they have bright accents in trendy colors like aqua and sage green.

» Compact size – Compared with machines that have more features and higher capacities, Weslos take up little space. For example, the Weslo Pro CrossWalk 7.8 Treadmill has a relatively short 50” tread belt, so it’s about ten inches shorter than many of its competitors. These machines are also rather lightweight and easy to transport.

Weslo Fitness Equipment Lines

Treadmills – The brand’s current treadmill lineup includes just two models, the Cardio Stride Plus and the Pro CrossWalk 7.8.

The Cardio Stride Plus is one of the most inexpensive treadmills on the market. It has a very simple console and just two workout programs. The arm handles are stationary. Nice features include three incline positions from 13% to 20% and a foldable SpaceSaver design.

The Pro CrossWalk 7.8 has movable arm bars to provide a full-body workout. It has six built-in workout programs, a fan, and a heart rate monitor. Special cushioning is designed to reduce the impact on joints by about 20% compared with road running.

Elliptical Machines – Elliptical machines or cross trainers simulate walking and running without putting undue pressure on exercisers’ joints. This can help to reduce the chance of impact-related injuries.

Weslo features three elliptical trainers for home use. All are priced for budget-minded consumers, and they’re best for shorter to average-height people because of their maximum stride being 18”. Customer reviews suggest that these machines are easy to assemble and are initially enjoyable, but they may soon become very noisy and require repairs.

The Momentum 620 and 630 each have two personal trainer workouts and a digital readout showing speed, time, distance, calories burned, fat calories burned, and pulse. The pulse monitor is built into the console and is taken with the thumb.

The Momentum CT 5.9 has six built-in aerobic workouts. This machine has a short 14” stride, so many people trying this machine will make more of a stepping motion than an elliptical motion.

These machines do not operate with motors but instead rely on a magnetic resistance system. Note that resistance tends to be significantly stronger in more expensive machines, so they can provide more challenging workouts.

Stationary bikes – Weslo sells four exercise bikes for home use. The Pursuit S 2.8 is an upright model and the other three are recumbent.

Pursuit S 2.8 – This machine has a very small seat that could quickly become uncomfortable. The S 2.8 displays speed, time, distance, calories and pulse. It can be transported easily thanks to its built-in wheels.

Pursuit CT 3.8 R – This exercise bike has an adjustable cushioned seat, a heart rate monitor, and a Target Pacer that works with two built-in workouts. The Target Pacer lets users know when to speed up or slow down to reach their goals.

Pursuit R 4.8 – This machine emphasizes comfort with a workout fan and a cushioned seat. Five personal training workouts and a grip heart rate monitor are included.

Pursuit T 3.8 – The T 3.8 features extra back support, a grip heart rate monitor, and six personal training workouts with Target Pacer technology.

Drawbacks of Weslo Fitness Equipment

Few programs – Weslo treadmills, ellipticals, and bikes are very low on programming. Their machines have just 2 – 6 exercise programs each, so routines can quickly become boring. Other budget brands offer at least double the options.

Lower weight capacities – These relatively small machines are made of plastic parts, not heavy steel like their more expensive competitors. Weslo machines are generally labeled with 250-pound user weight capacities, but customer reviews suggest that 150 pounds might be more accurate.

Shorter warranties – Many Weslo products include just 90-day warranties on parts and labor. Equipment can be returned within 30 days of purchase for a refund. The return shipping cost and a restocking fee are deducted from the refund.

Lower quality – Weslo fitness machines are not intended for heavy use and may wear out quickly. Customers frequently complain about broken parts during their first year of ownership.

HealthRider entered the fitness scene in the early 1990s. The brand debuted with the budget-priced HealthRider, a unique low-impact exercise machine that combines pedaling with a rowing motion. The product caught the eye of ICON Health and Fitness, and since 1997, ICON has owned the HealthRider name. (ICON also owns ProForm, NordicTrack, and several other brands of fitness equipment.) ICON has expanded the line to include treadmills, elliptical machines, and stationary bicycles.

Special Features of HealthRider Fitness Equipment

» Low cost has always characterized this brand. For example, of the four HealthRider treadmills in the 2010 lineup, three could be found for sale online for under $1000. The same holds true for the brand’s elliptical trainers.

» Extra features such as HealthRider’s built-in personal trainer workouts, speaker systems, and workout fans aren’t always available with budget equipment.

» Higher weight capacities – When compared with other budget brands, this brand’s treadmills and cross trainers tend to have higher user weight capacities.

Another HealthRider Brand Advantage: iFit Live

iFit Live is included on newer HealthRider trainers. This unique technology offers virtual personal training with Jillian Michaels and other personal trainers. iFit Live even lets users virtually experience trails from all over the globe; the technology makes fitness machines automatically adjust to mimic the real terrain.

With iFit.com, members can automatically upload their workout data, get personalized advice, and compete in virtual races with friends who use Facebook.

HealthRider Equipment Lines

The HealthRider (HR2) – Customer satisfaction is high for this product. The HR2 weight loss machine provides low-impact full-body workouts. It looks like a hybrid between an elliptical machine and a recumbent bike, and users liken the upper-body workout to rowing with resistance. The HealthRider is small enough to keep in most apartments or condos and is priced well under $1000.

Treadmills – The brand’s current treadmill lineup includes 4 models, ranging from the relatively sparse H75t to the Club Series H155t.

The H75t is a good overall value. It has a 2.5 HP motor, an iFit card reader, Intermix Acoustics, and built-in personal training programs. However, a drawback is that users can’t input their weight. This results in inaccurate estimates of calorie burning. The mid-series H95t does not have this problem. Also, the H95t has a touch-screen display in addition to an iPod dock and iFit Live.

At the top of the line, the 3.5 horsepower H155t has a cable TV built right into the console! It also features a 60” long tread belt, 0-12 mph capability, and 32 built-in workout programs – plus the ability to get additional programs through iFit Live.

Elliptical Machines – Elliptical machines, sometimes called cross trainers, are used to simulate walking or running without putting undue pressure on joints. This helps to minimize the effects of repeated impact. While ellipticals workouts are low-impact, they can be high or low in intensity, according to the individual’s preference.

HealthRider now features four elliptical trainers for home use. These are priced for the more budget-minded consumer, but all tend to receive good ratings and most have iFit workout options. Here are some highlights:

The StrideTrainer 900 has an Intensity Stride PowerRamp to add more diversity and intensity to workouts; by working out with ramps, people can isolate different muscle groups and burn calories more quickly. Also included are a heart rate monitor, iFit Live, and a music port.

A neat feature of the Club Series H140e is its power supply: you! To save on electricity bills, the elliptical’s console is powered by energy from user workouts. This environmentally friendly machine also features a 20” stride. Fifteen personal training programs are included.

The H90e and H95e use a PowerRamp to provide Target Toning. That is, a user enters his or her personal data and goals, and the machine automatically adjusts its resistance and speed to provide the optimal workout. These elliptical trainers also include iFit Live.

HealthRider bike – Sit back and have fun! Games such as BlackJack, Calorie Destroyer, and Fat Blocker are built into the console of HeathRider’s H45xr. This recumbent exercise bike also has an iFit card reader, so customers can add on unlimited 8-week personal training sessions that target specific goals, such as endurance and weight loss.

This bike is especially recommended to people with back pain and joint problems, and those who’d rather not climb onto an upright bike.

Drawbacks of HealthRider Fitness Equipment

Shorter warranties – Many HealthRider products include just 90-day parts warranties and 1-year frame warranties. Some include lifetime frame warranties and 1-year parts warranties. In either case, longer warranties are normally offered on big purchases like fitness equipment.

iFit requirements – To enjoy many of iFit’s special features, the user needs to have wireless internet technology in the workout area. Also, the cost of an iFit Live membership and/or iFit cards should be figured into the purchase price if applicable.

Lower quality – The cheaper fitness equipment from this brand has entertaining extras, but it lacks the durability and overall quality of more expensive offerings. Most HealthRider fitness machines are not intended for heavy daily use.

The Utah-based company Weider Health and Fitness dates back to the 1930s. Since 1994, the Weider fitness brand has been managed by ICON Health and Fitness, a global leader in fitness equipment manufacturing. ICON owns several other popular fitness brands such as ProForm, NordicTrack, and HealthRider. While many of these brands emphasize treadmills and elliptical trainers, the Weider brand is especially focused on home gyms and free weights.

Special Features of Weider Fitness Equipment

» Solid Home Gyms – Weider customers generally report that the home gyms are easy to set up, yet sturdy enough to handle heavy training.

» All-in-One Space Savers – Many Weider products are truly all-in-one home gyms, so nothing else is needed. With just one machine, users can perform dozens of exercises and tone themselves from head to toe. Weider weights are also designed to be space-saving; the adjustable kettle bells store weights in a neat stack to keep workout areas free of clutter.

Weider Equipment Lines

The X Factor – The X Factor is one of Weider’s most popular products, partly because it’s gained exposure through TV commercials. It’s an inexpensive, X-shaped device that can be strapped to a door. With two arm grips and two ankle bands, this simple yet brilliant system provides up to 210 pounds of resistance. It’s sold with 3 DVDs that show customers how to get challenging full-body workouts. This product is a good buy if it fits a doorway that’s convenient for exercise.

Another option is the X Factor Home Gym, which offers essentially the same workout but is freestanding. This responds to the problem of people (especially renters) being unable to adjust door jambs for the original X Factor. It also lets people set up the gym equipment in a place that’s convenient for watching exercise DVDs.

Other Home Gyms – Weider sells three main home gym systems: the two X Factor gyms described above, and the Club 8980 W System. The Club 8980 has 150 pounds of vinyl weights, a leg developer, and high and low arm pulleys — each of which can be used for many different exercises.

Several items in the brand’s “body weight equipment” line could also be considered home gyms.

Body Weight Equipment

Weider’s line of body weight equipment includes six products ranging from the very simple Chrome Chin-Up Bar to the Total Body Works 500, which permits more than 50 exercises for a full-body workout. Here are some highlights:

Two Chin-Up Bars – Choose from the basic Chrome Chin-Up Bar or the more advanced Weider PowerMax, a set that includes an over-the-door attachment and rotating push-up stands.

Weider Club 390 Power Tower – This is the leading model in the brand’s Power Tower collection. It has 80 pounds of resistance and features a dip station, pull-up station, and knee raise area.

Total Body Works 500 – This bench-based workout system is ideal for achieving better strength and flexibility, and it gets excellent customer reviews. It features an adjustable incline and includes instructions for more than 50 exercises. Adjustable bands increase resistance up to 50 pounds beyond the user’s body weight.

Kettle Bells – Kettle bells are free weights that deliver exceptional workouts. They’re distinguished by their unique and somewhat bell-like design: circular weights attach to a curved handle. In a study of kettle bell use at the University of Wisconsin in LaCrosse, participants burned up to 400 calories in just 20 minutes!

Another advantage of kettle bells is that they require relatively little storage space. Weider’s kettle bell set includes seven weights ranging from 5 to 20 pounds each, and these all stack together for efficient storage. Single kettle bells are also sold separately.

Customers are split when reviewing these weights. Some are very satisfied, but others complain that the weights are noisy. The 40-pound kettle bell isn’t advisable; many customers have reported that its handle becomes loose.

Dumbbells – In addition to its kettle bells, Weider sells a variety of traditional free weights that get consistently positive reviews. These include cast iron dumbbells with hexagonal heads, soft neoprene dumbbells with rounded heads, and round vinyl weights with a hollow bar.

Benches – The company currently offers four adjustable benches. The Pro 220 and 230 are the simpler options. These include 4-roll leg developers and exercise charts. The Club Sidekick bench includes these features plus two 50-pound hand weights, a weight stand, and greater bench adjustability. Finally, the Weider 200 Olympic Weight Bench fits Olympic specifications and has a safety spotter.

Inversion System – Inversion systems are used to help counteract the negative effects of gravity, such as back pain and compressed cartilage. They may also be used to stimulate blood flow above the heart (e.g., to the brain and hair follicles on the scalp). The Weider Club Inversion System is an inversion table with ankle lockdown, arm grips, and an adjustable center of gravity.

Drawbacks of Weider Fitness Equipment

Variable quality – The home gyms get mostly positive reviews, but customers sometimes point out cheap components such as shoddy plastic wheels. Also, Weider brand kettle bells have frequently been criticized as noisy and not so durable.

Short warranties – Many Weider products have just 90-day parts warranties. The company’s main assurance is a 30-day free trial period. Equipment can be returned within 30 days of purchase, minus the shipping cost and a 10% restocking fee.

Poor customer service – Buyers have complained that customer support is slow and unhelpful.

In the 1980s, the ProForm name was launched with an innovative fold-away treadmill. Since then, the ProForm brand has been acquired by the international manufacturing giant Icon Fitness. Thanks to Icon’s research and development, today ProForm features treadmills, elliptical trainers, stationary bikes, and strength training equipment.

Special Features of ProForm Fitness Equipment

» Extra value for beginners – ProForm fitness machines are not necessarily designed for marathon trainers. However, beginners find that they’re satisfying machines because of their extra features such as inclines and audio systems, which aren’t always offered with other brands’ lower-priced models. The ZX2 Upright Bike even includes games called Calorie Destroyer and Fat Blocker. These extras help people stay motivated to exercise.

» iFit Live – This wireless internet technology is included on newer models of ProForm ellipticals, treadmills, and stationary bikes. iFit Live offers virtual personal training with Jillian Michaels from TV’s The Biggest Loser. It even lets people virtually hike or bike through national parks (Grand Canyon, Yosemite, etc.) or any other terrain that has been mapped with Google Maps.

Another ProForm Advantage: Brand Recognition

The ProForm brand is backed by the marketing and distribution powers of Icon Health and Fitness, one of the world’s largest producers of fitness equipment. The brand’s popularity means that even if you buy your fitness equipment online, it shouldn’t be difficult to get the machine serviced locally. The brand recognition also means that resale value is relatively high. This is especially important for entry-level machines since some customers will out-perform them within a year or two.

ProForm Equipment Lines

Treadmills – The ProForm brand got its start with foldable treadmills, but today it also includes heavier machines with expanded features. The current lineup includes eleven treadmills across four series: the ProForm Tech Series, Power Series, CrossWalk Series, and ProShox Series. Treadmills in each series are iFit-compatible. Here are some other highlights:

The Tech Series emphasizes electronics: with the Epic View 550, exercisers get a music port, Intermix Acoustics speakers, and a 7” flat-screen cable TV!

The CrossWalk Series emphasizes the addition of upper-body training to treadmill workouts. Arm training lets people burn up to 50% more calories than walking or running alone.

In the Power Series, the 995 boasts a powerful 3.5 HP motor that rivals those of commercial treadmills. More powerful motors can generally support more frequent use and people of heavier weight.

The ProShox Series is especially appealing for its toning abilities. Patented technology changes the deck’s elevation with every step, helping to keep the user’s muscles taut throughout the workout – not just during a certain part of their stride. This can dramatically improve the efficiency of workouts: just 15 minutes can be comparable to a regular 1-hour workout.

Elliptical Machines – Elliptical trainers stand out for offering low-impact yet highly efficient cardiovascular workouts. ProForm’s lineup includes six elliptical models in two series: the Front Drive Series and the Rear Drive Series.

The Front Drive Series is designed to maximize stride while minimizing the machine’s footprint (or required floor space). 18” and 20” stride lengths are available.

The Rear Drive Series stands out for its 40-degree incline, which lets users isolate more muscle groups with just one machine. These have strides up to 21”.

Incline Trainer – The ProForm incline trainer, the XT 90, is a treadmill with 10° and 20° incline options. Users can burn up to four times the calories they’d burn on just a flat surface. The XT 90 has an effective air-based shock absorption system to help protect joints from heavy impact.

Exercise bikes – ProForm’s current line of stationary bikes includes three upright models and one recumbent (or reclining) model. The ZX2 Upright stands out for its fitness games and 16 built-in personal training programs. Meanwhile, the ProForm Live Spin Bike has a 20-degree incline and a 20-degree decline. This lets riders virtually experience the diverse topography of real-world terrain mapped by Google Maps.

Strength Training Equipment

ProForm’s strength training equipment includes dumbbells, a vibrating platform, a cardio glider, and several products that focus on abdominal muscles. Here are some highlights:

Vibrating platform: Vibrating platforms helps build bone density and provide extra stimulation to muscular tissue. ProForm’s Activator V7 includes a set of selectable weight dumbbells.

Cardio Glide Plus: This multi-position bench includes a rower and supports dozens of exercises for the shoulders, arms, back, and chest. It includes an LCD screen that displays workout data.

Abdominal products: Options include: an over-the-door grip bar called the PowerFlex; the floor-based AB Arc, which rotates 180 degrees; and the ProForm Abs bench, which supports full-body shaping and toning.

Drawbacks of ProForm Fitness Equipment

Shorter warranties – Some of the company’s newer products have extended warranties. For example, ProForm treadmill motors are sold with up to 25-year warranties. However, many of this brand’s ellipticals, treadmills, and other products include just 1-year warranties. Customers should compare purchase prices and warranty information when choosing big-ticket fitness equipment.

Variable quality – Some ProForm fitness machines are much better than others. For instance, the foldaway 10.0 ZE elliptical trainer is limited by just 12 levels of resistance and a low weight capacity – but the top-of-the-line 1050 E has the industry standard of 20 resistance levels plus a power ramp and adjustable stride. With this brand, a bit of extra money usually goes a long way.

Lower weight capacity – While other brands can accommodate users weighing 400 pounds or more, ProForm fitness machines max out at a 350-pound user weight capacity. Many of their models are labeled for use by people weighing 250 pounds or less.

Wireless requirement – ProForm and other brands by Icon Fitness are distinguished by their iFit technology. However, to enjoy many of iFit’s special features, customers need to have wireless internet technology in their workout areas.

The NordicTrack fitness brand debuted in 1989 during the heyday of infomercials. That year, millions of Americans first saw the intense calorie-burning NordicTrack ski machine in action. Since then, the brand has been expanded to include treadmills, elliptical trainers, stationary bikes, and other fitness products.

Special Features of NordicTrack Fitness Equipment

» iFit Live is included on the newer NordicTrack bikes, incline trainers, and other gym equipment. This unique technology offers virtual personal training with Jillian Michaels from TV’s The Biggest Loser, so each user can be guided toward individualized goals. iFit even lets users compete in treadmill races with their Facebook friends and virtually hike through Yosemite National Park and other popular destinations.

» Full color screens help keep exercisers motivated. NordicTrack’s advanced consoles look just like personal computer screens. They display motivational messages, fitness games, fitness videos, virtual hikes powered by Google Maps, and more.

» Audio entertainment centers on NordicTracks include iPod docks and high fidelity speaker sets.

» Compact design is used on several models. The A.C.T. Commercial Elliptical is just 47” long, and the NordicTrack Reflex 8500 Pro Treadmill folds up to save space. The brand’s classic skier can also be adjusted to take up little space.

Another NordicTrack Brand Advantage: Popularity

NordicTrack is now owned by Icon Health and Fitness, one of the world’s largest producers of fitness equipment. This means that the equipment is well-distributed and well-known throughout the US and Canada. You can buy NordicTrack products online and rest assured that there’s a knowledgeable technician in your area if ever needed. The brand recognition also means that resale value is relatively high if you decide to trade up.

NordicTrack Equipment Lines

Treadmills – Treadmills are among the most popular fitness machines in the world, and customers tend to give NordicTrack treadmills five-star ratings. They like their inclines, commercial-grade motors, cushioned tracks, and 7” flat-screen TVs. The newer NordicTrack treadmills are also equipped with iFit technology for virtual personal training and exercising with Google Maps technology. The brand’s current treadmill lineup includes 12 models, so there’s something for everyone.

Incline Trainers – NordicTrack incline trainers are endorsed by “America’s Toughest Trainer,” Jillian Michaels, because they burn up to five times the calories expended during traditional training. At the same time, NordicTrack incline trainers are designed to be low-impact and easy on the joints.

These can reach speeds of up to 12 mph and are available with iFit Live. Of the brand’s three current models, two feature extra-long tread belts and a variable decline in addition to the incline.

Elliptical Machines – NordicTrack elliptical trainers stand out for offering good value and innovative features. Consumers benefit from Icon Fitness’s large economy of scale, getting more machine for less money. Several models can even be folded to save space in smaller homes. However, there have been complaints about noise for some of these machines, especially when they’re used by heavier individuals.

There are eight NordicTrack elliptical models, and each has appealing features. The FreeStrider 35 Si stands out in particular because of its extra-long variable stride.

NordicTrack bikes – NordicTrack’s current offerings include two upright stationary bikes and two recumbent stationary bikes. Recumbent bikes may be especially recommended to people with back pain or joint problems. Special features of NordicTrack bicycles include iFit compatibility, music ports, built-in fitness games, and up to 30 built-in personal trainer workouts.

NordicTrack Strength Training Equipment

NordicTrack’s diverse line of strength training equipment includes two full sets of weights, two vibrating platforms, and two all-in-one gym products that are “As Seen on TV.”

Weights: The NordicTrack Kettle Bell has a unique adjustable-weight design. Users have been shown to burn up to 400 calories in just twenty minutes, and the Kettle Bell is sold with a free DVD to help you achieve that statistic. Another weight option is the ProQuick 100, which is a full set of traditional dumbbells with an adjustable-height stand.

Vibrating platforms: Vibrating gym equipment helps build bone density and provides extra stimulation to muscular tissue. NordicTrack features two vibrating platforms: the Activator V3 Plus, which is sold with four kettle bells, and the V7 with a built-in handle for stabilization. Customers rave about the V7 because its handle supports them during squats, crunches, dips, and push-ups.

As Seen on TV: NordicTrack features two As Seen on TV products. One is the NordicFlex Gold, which focuses on the upper body. This is a bar that can be attached to a door frame with the included hardware. The other is the NordicTrack Personal Trainer III. It’s a bench-based, computerized system that actually tells users what steps to take.

NordicTrack Striders

The NordicTrack FreeStrider series includes two elliptical trainer models with incredible 35” variable strides. These let users exercise a wide variety of muscle groups, always using a full range of motion.

Another option in the strider category is the Mini Stepper, an inexpensive portable machine that tones the buns, thighs, and calves.

NordicTrack Skiers

Despite all their modern developments, NordicTrack still rightfully takes pride in its Classic Pro Skier with its sturdy oak and steel design. They advertise that after 20 years, “it’s still the best total-body, calorie burning workout available.” These machines have adjustable elevations and variable resistance, so they can help an exerciser burn calories quickly. They’re also great for muscle toning and cardiovascular fitness. Exercise data are displayed in five LED windows.

Drawbacks of NordicTrack Fitness Equipment

Shorter warranties – Many NordicTrack ellipticals, treadmills, and other products include just 1-year warranties. Longer warranties are usually offered on big purchases. However, free in-home service is provided if something should go wrong during the first year.

Wireless requirement – To enjoy many of iFit’s special features, the user needs to have wireless internet technology in the workout area.

Size — Some NordicTrack equipment is cleverly designed for small spaces and portability. However, some of the brand’s elliptical machines and treadmills have large footprints, so be sure to check a machine’s dimensions before ordering.
